Telemedicine With Selfies?
Selfies, the popular photo trend afflicting teens today, is now becoming a tool to help many of those same teens address another affliction, acne. San Diego dermatologist, David Lortscher, recently started his own dermatology company, called “Pocket Derm.” Patients complete their medical history online, and then transmit high quality pictures of themselves, giving doctors a sense of their medical history and treatment requirements, without having to see them in person. “Lortscher plans to treat patients with mild or moderate acne. He said the health history and pictures should be enough to develop a prescription plan.” While most state laws require doctors to meet with patients prior to describing drugs, the limited nature of physical examinations required for dermatology patients makes this Mobile Health trend increasingly popular with dermatologists. By transmitting “selfies”, the patient saves time, the doctor can prescribe and monitor treatment plan more efficiently. Just the click of a button is the newest trend in today’s health market.
